Abia State Government has frowned at a statement by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, directing civil and public servants in Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, and the 17 LGAs not to participate in the online upload of their credentials, as ordered by the state government.
The Commissioner for Information and culture, Okey Kanu, frowned at the NLC directive at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
The NLC had through its state Chairman, Ogbonnaya Okoro, directed all civil and public servants in the MDAs and LGAs not to upload their credentials online, as directed by the Abia State Head of Service, Mrs Ngozi Obioma.
The NLC alleged that the online credentials upload was designed to subject civil servants in the state to another round of difficulties, adding that it was another form of verification.
But Kanu explained that the issue of upload of requisite credentials was necessitated by the government’s discovery of lack of requisite credentials in the files of some civil servants and public servants.
Kanu made it clear that the credentials upload is not another verification exercise, as being alleged by the NLC.
“The government discovered that some people don’t possess the right credentials and it was because some appointments were supposed to be made. The governor asked that the files of workers be looked through and those who were qualified to take up those positions let their papers be brought forward.
“It was during that process that it was discovered that a lot of people didn’t have their credentials,” Kanu said.
He accused NLC in the state of not being fair to the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Abia workers.
Kanu, who urged the organized labour not to destroy the good relationship between the workers and Abia State Government, used the occasion to disclose that perennial flooding in Aba is being tackled by the present administration.
