Abia Assembly creates new ministry to minimize state’s reliance on federal allocation

Abia State House of Assembly has passed H.A.B 27, the Abia State Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) Bill 2024, which seeks to establish the Abia State Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) and for other matters related thereto, into Law.

The bill which was sponsored by Majority Leader, Okoro Uchenna Kalu, (Arochukwu State Constituency), received accelerated consideration after several debates.

The merits of the law, according to the Abia State House of Assembly, include conducive partnership for investments by the private sector, wealth generation, minimized reliance on federal allocation among others.

It shall be deemed to come into effect from the 26th of November, 2024.

Also during Plenary, the member representing Ohafia North State Constituency, Egwuronu Ochuru Obasi, in a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, called on the Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Health, to investigate the immediate and remote causes of adverse drug reaction suffered by his constituents in Abiriba on Saturday after consuming drugs distributed by a donor agency, Imo-Hope for the Hopeless.

He said that the free medical outreach was attracted by the Presbyterian Church in Abiriba.

In reaction, the Assembly considered the incident a huge embarrassment as the said agency did not get the approval of relevant bodies before embarking on the outreach.

The Abia lawmakers resolved that the state’s Ministry of Health should investigate the incident to ascertain who the donor agency is and the source of the drugs given to Abiriba residents.
