There is growing uncertainty and anxiety over the whereabouts of the kidnapped former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Okey Wali (SAN).
This came as the NBA Chairman, Port Harcourt branch, Viktor Benibo, said there had been no words from the captors since the unfortunate incident.
Recall that Wali was reportedly kidnapped last Tuesday at the Obiri-kwere axis of the East-West Road, near Port Harcourt by armed men dressed in military uniform who intercepted his vehicle.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on his vehicle and killed two of his aides before whisking him away.
The immediate past Chairman of the NBA, Port Harcourt branch, Prince Nyekwere, had said it was the second time Wali would be abducted.
Nyekwere added, “It is unfortunate that the abductors are yet to make contact. We fervently pray God to cause a miraculous and the safe release of Okay Wali (SAN).”
Nyekwere’s successor, Benibo, while speaking with our correspondent on Sunday, expressed worry that nearly a week, the kidnappers had yet to contact Wali’s family.
He said the President of the NBA, Yakubu Maikyau, had just arrived Port Harcourt in view of the abduction of the 26th President of the NBA.
Benibo stated, “No information, nothing. They (kidnappers) have not established any contact with the family.
“That is what is more agonising. Our National President just came into town today (Sunday).
“So, from now on we will be taking directives from him in this issue.”
Recall that Maikyau had, in a statement in the wake of Wali’s kidnap, pleaded with his captors not to harm the prominent lawyer whom he said had served in different capacities and contributed to the profession and enrichment of the rule of law in the country
When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Okon Effiong, said the command was working round the clock to ensure that Wali was rescued unhurt.
“We are working very hard to ensure we rescue him unhurt. Not only that, but also to get those behind his kidnap and make them face the law.
“I believe very soon, just keep your fingers crossed,” CP Effiong stated.
