A violent attack on a sand mining site in Ogun State has left multiple people dead and forced residents of nearby communities to flee in fear.
Gunmen targeted a sand miner identified as Kapo at a private site in Magbon-Etido, Mowe, but met stiff resistance from security operatives and locals.
The confrontation left a soldier, a hunter, three abducted persons and one other individual dead, while police managed to rescue one kidnapped person alive and neutralise one of the attackers before the remaining gunmen escaped by boat along the Ogun River.
By Thursday, residents of Fowowawo, Ajerogun and Magbon-Etido had fled their homes in fear of reprisals, with community leaders including Baale Nurudeen Salisu and Agbekoya’s Musbau Adenekan describing scenes of sudden panic in areas normally bustling with traders and dredgers.
The Ogun State Police Command described the incident as an isolated attack and vowed to pursue the fleeing suspects, as displaced families sought temporary shelter with relatives while awaiting a return to normalcy
