U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred debate after telling basketball fans who cannot afford soaring NBA Finals ticket prices to watch the games on television instead.
Trump made the remark while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after confirming he would attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden in New York. When asked about reports that some tickets had climbed as high as $8,000, making them inaccessible to many ordinary Americans, the president responded that fans could simply watch the game on television.
“They can watch it on television,” Trump said, adding that it was “sorta semi-free” to watch on TV and remarking that “that’s the way life goes.”
The comments quickly generated reactions on social media, with critics arguing that the response appeared dismissive of concerns about the rising cost of attending major sporting events. Supporters, however, noted that high-demand championship games have historically attracted premium ticket prices and that television broadcasts remain the primary way most fans follow such events.
Ticket prices for the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance in decades have surged dramatically, with some resale listings reportedly exceeding $9,000 and premium seats reaching far higher figures as demand continues to soar.
Trump, a longtime Knicks supporter, is expected to attend the historic Finals matchup, a visit that has prompted extensive security preparations around Madison Square Garden. His attendance is also expected to make him the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game.
