Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and senior United Nations officials have held a high-level coordination meeting to review the country’s worsening humanitarian situation and strengthen aid delivery efforts for vulnerable communities affected by recurring crises.

The meeting, held in Mogadishu on Tuesday, was jointly chaired by the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, and the United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia and Humanitarian Coordinator, George Conway.

Senior officials from SoDMA and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reviewed recent humanitarian developments across Somalia and discussed strategies aimed at improving assistance to populations affected by drought, flooding, displacement, and conflict-related challenges.

Abdulle described regular coordination meetings as critical to improving humanitarian planning, emergency response operations, and the overall implementation of relief interventions across the country.

He emphasised that sustained collaboration between Somali authorities and international humanitarian partners remains essential to addressing the growing needs of affected populations.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen joint efforts aimed at supporting Somalis facing severe humanitarian conditions across different parts of the country.

Somalia continues to battle recurring climate-related shocks, including prolonged droughts and destructive floods, alongside insecurity and large-scale displacement.

Humanitarian agencies estimate that millions of Somalis remain dependent on humanitarian assistance for food, shelter, healthcare, and other essential services.

The United Nations and aid agencies have repeatedly warned that climate-related disasters, conflict, and economic pressures continue to deepen humanitarian vulnerabilities across the Horn of Africa nation.

The latest meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by Somali authorities and international partners to improve emergency response coordination and expand humanitarian support to communities most at risk.
