The administration of Donald Trump has reportedly backed away from a controversial $1.8 billion compensation fund that had sparked fierce criticism from lawmakers, legal observers, and even members of the Republican Party. The fund, which emerged from the settlement of Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leaking of his 2019 tax returns, had been widely criticized as a potential political “slush fund.”
According to reports from Washington, opposition intensified after concerns emerged that individuals connected to the January 6 Capitol riot could potentially benefit from the arrangement. Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, reportedly pressured the White House to halt the initiative amid growing political tensions.
A federal judge in Virginia also temporarily blocked the Department of Justice from distributing any money tied to the fund while legal challenges continue in court. Following the court order, the DOJ confirmed it would pause all activities related to the program.
The controversy has also exposed internal disagreements within the administration over who approved the plan and whether senior White House officials were properly informed before it was announced. Some officials reportedly claimed the West Wing was “blindsided” by the arrangement.
Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have vowed to continue efforts to permanently block the proposal, arguing that taxpayer funds should not be used in ways that could politically benefit Trump allies.
The development marks another significant political setback for the Trump administration as it pushes forward with broader immigration enforcement and legal reform priorities ahead of a heated election season in Washington.
