Ride-hailing giant Uber has launched an investigation after three female passengers in Hong Kong alleged that a driver made them fear for their safety during an early morning trip from Central.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:07 a.m. on Sunday, when the women boarded an Uber ride in a Tesla Model Y after a night out in the city.
One of the passengers later shared the experience online, claiming the driver began making vulgar jokes during the journey, leaving the trio “extremely uncomfortable.”
The passenger also alleged that the driver called a friend during the ride and said he was transporting three women, while the friend reportedly seemed to know their destination.
Concerns escalated after the driver allegedly deviated from the original route multiple times and reportedly told the passengers he was searching for a toilet.
The woman further claimed that the vehicle later headed toward Tai Po, which was said to be far from the passengers’ intended destination.
According to her account, the driver’s friend later stated that he was nearby, heightening the women’s fears that they could be in danger.
The passengers reportedly asked to be dropped off after becoming increasingly alarmed. The woman alleged that the vehicle doors were locked at one point when they attempted to leave.
Uber confirmed on Monday that it was aware of the allegations and had already contacted the driver as part of an ongoing investigation.
“We absolutely do not condone this type of reported behaviour on our platform,” an Uber spokesperson said.
The company added that all users and drivers on the platform are expected to comply with Uber’s community guidelines, stressing that violations could result in permanent removal from the service.
The incident has triggered widespread reactions online, with many social media users raising concerns about passenger safety during late-night rides and calling for stricter monitoring measures for ride-hailing services.
