Residents of Khayelitsha in South Africa are facing growing fears following a recent surge in deadly gun violence that has left at least nine people dead in three separate mass shootings.

Community crime prevention groups said the killings have shaken residents and threatened years of efforts aimed at rebuilding trust between communities and law enforcement authorities.

Khayelitsha Spiritual Crime Prevention representative, Sakhele Kula, warned that the continued violence could undermine community safety initiatives in the area.

Gun Free South Africa also expressed concern over what it described as increasing public desensitisation to violence.

The organisation called for stronger action against illegal firearms, improved prosecution processes, better prevention measures and reforms in firearm management systems.

In another development, South African police confirmed that no injuries were recorded after an explosion occurred inside a store at Menlyn Mall in Pretoria.

Authorities said an unidentified explosive device detonated on one of the store shelves, damaging food items and shelves within the premises.

Five workers were reportedly inside the store at the time of the incident, but no casualties were recorded.

Police said investigations into the explosion are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Pietermaritzburg High Court has barred the Mayor of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, Mduduzi Myeza, from entering business premises owned by foreign nationals except during official inspections.

The court also ordered the mayor not to share social media posts capable of inciting violence.

The ruling followed a legal challenge filed by 38 shop owners in Estcourt who accused the mayor of intimidation.

Myeza had previously called on undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

However, his legal representative, Xolani Zuma, argued that the mayor was exercising his constitutional rights and carrying out civic responsibilities.

The developments come amid growing debates in South Africa over crime, xenophobia, community safety and governance challenges.
