U.S. President Donald Trump has reacted to the Democratic primary defeat of longtime Texas Congressman Al Green with a series of mocking remarks that quickly sparked reactions across American political circles.
Green, one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress and a lawmaker known for repeatedly pushing impeachment efforts against the president, lost a Democratic runoff contest in Texas’ newly redrawn 18th Congressional District to freshman Congressman Christian Menefee. The race followed a controversial Republican-led redistricting process that reshaped several Houston-area congressional districts.
Reacting to the outcome, Trump posted a sarcastic message congratulating Democrats while ridiculing Green over his past disruptions during presidential addresses. Trump referenced Green’s cane-waving protest during a previous State of the Union speech, saying he would “miss” the Texas lawmaker’s confrontational appearances.
Green had become nationally recognized for his repeated clashes with Trump, including multiple impeachment filings and interruptions during congressional speeches. Earlier in 2025, he was formally censured after interrupting Trump during a joint session of Congress.
Political observers say the defeat reflects both the impact of Texas redistricting and a broader generational shift within parts of the Democratic Party. Menefee, 38, campaigned as a younger and more modern progressive voice, eventually defeating the 78-year-old Green in the heavily Democratic district.
Despite the heated campaign and Trump’s reaction, Green reportedly told supporters after the loss that he remains committed to public service and advocacy work beyond Congress.
