The PGA of America has announced the removal of its president, Don Rea, from the remainder of his term, with Vice President Nathan Charnes immediately elevated to serve as Acting President.
The decision was confirmed on Friday by the organization’s Board of Directors, which stated that a leadership transition had become necessary following “a series of issues over time” that were considered detrimental to the association. Rea’s term was originally scheduled to run until November 2026.
Nathan Charnes, a PGA golf professional and longtime administrator within the organization, will now oversee the association’s leadership responsibilities during the transition period. Eric Eshleman was also elevated to Acting Vice President as part of the reshuffle.
Rea’s presidency had faced growing scrutiny in recent months, particularly after controversy surrounding fan behavior at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. His public comments at the time drew criticism from sections of the golf community, especially after incidents involving abuse directed at European players, including Rory McIlroy.
The PGA of America had already reduced Rea’s visible leadership responsibilities earlier this year, including his removal from PGA Tour policy boards and his absence from several major PGA events and public briefings.
The PGA of America, founded in 1916 and headquartered in Frisco, Texas, remains one of golf’s most influential governing bodies, overseeing major tournaments including the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup operations in the United States.
