From Dispatch Room
South Africa’s Department of Employment and Labour has warned that employers hiring undocumented immigrants could face criminal charges under the country’s Migration Act.
The warning followed a joint operation involving the Department of Home Affairs, the South African Police Service and law enforcement agencies at a construction site in Cape Town’s central business district.
Several undocumented immigrants were reportedly arrested during the operation.
Department spokesperson Teboho Thejane said employers found violating immigration laws by employing undocumented workers could face serious legal consequences.
Authorities identified the construction sector as one of the key areas of concern in the enforcement campaign.
The development comes amid heightened debates in South Africa over immigration, unemployment and labour enforcement policies.
