The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, has confirmed a deadly attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, resulting in the killing of a teacher and the abduction of several pupils.
In a statement issued on Thursday, OYOSUBEB described the incident as a painful moment for the education sector and expressed deep concern over the safety of pupils, teachers, and residents in the affected community.
According to the Board, the attack occurred at LA School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele.
The Board stated that the exact number of kidnapped pupils had not yet been confirmed as security agencies were still combing the area and gathering details surrounding the incident.
Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, said the Board was working closely with the Oyo State Ministry of Education and security agencies to address the situation.
He disclosed that security operatives, under the coordination of the Commissioner of Police, had already deployed a tactical response team to the affected area to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and restore calm within the community.
As part of emergency safety measures, OYOSUBEB directed all primary schools in neighbouring communities, including Surulere, Oyo East, Oriire, and Olorunsogo, to immediately shut down operations until further notice.
The Board explained that the temporary closure was necessary to prevent possible secondary attacks and allow security agencies to stabilise the environment.
Dr. Adeniran appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of escalating panic.
He assured residents that the government would continue to work towards the safe return of every abducted child while maintaining close communication with security agencies for updates on rescue efforts.
The Board also mourned the slain teacher, describing his death as a tragic loss to the education sector and the wider community.
OYOSUBEB reiterated its commitment to protecting pupils and ensuring that schools across the state remain safe learning environments.
