New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has abandoned plans to increase property taxes as part of efforts to address the city’s growing financial pressures.
The decision was announced on Tuesday as Mamdani unveiled a proposed $124.7 billion executive budget for the upcoming fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026.
The mayor had earlier considered raising property taxes to help close a projected two-year budget deficit, but the proposal reportedly faced strong public resistance and political opposition.
Instead of the tax increase, the administration is now expected to explore alternative revenue sources, including measures targeting second-home ownership and other financial adjustments within the city’s revenue structure.
Mamdani’s latest budget proposal also includes continued funding for childcare expansion, grocery affordability initiatives, public transportation improvements, and immigrant protection programmes.
The budget plan is expected to trigger negotiations with the New York City Council in the coming weeks before final approval.
Political analysts say the reversal on property taxes reflects growing sensitivity around cost-of-living concerns in New York City, where residents continue to face rising housing and living expenses.
