A Ui90.S. federal judge has ordered the release of a handwritten note purportedly written by Jeffrey Epstein before his death in a New York jail, reopening public attention around one of America’s most controversial custodial deaths.

The note, which had remained under seal for years, was reportedly found by Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, after Epstein’s earlier suspected suicide attempt in July 2019. Epstein was later found dead in his jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving minors. His death was officially ruled a suicide by the New York City medical examiner.

According to reports, the document was discovered tucked inside a book in the cell Epstein shared with Tartaglione, a former police officer who is serving life sentences for a separate quadruple murder case. Tartaglione later handed the note to his lawyers, and the document became part of court proceedings linked to his case.

The note reportedly contains frustrated and fatalistic language, including a reference to being able to “choose one’s time to say goodbye.” It also includes statements suggesting Epstein believed investigators had failed to prove allegations against him. However, the note was not signed, and its authenticity has not been officially verified by federal authorities.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas granted the release after a request from The New York Times, finding that the note qualified as a judicial document of public interest. The decision does not resolve lingering questions about the note’s origin, chain of custody, or whether it should be treated as a confirmed suicide note.

Epstein’s 2019 death has remained a subject of intense public debate because of his connections to wealthy and politically influential figures, as well as earlier failures at the detention facility where he was held. The release of the note is expected to fuel renewed scrutiny, although no official finding has changed: authorities have continued to classify Epstein’s death as suicide.

The new development adds another layer to a case that has remained politically sensitive and emotionally charged, especially for victims who had hoped Epstein would face a full public trial. For now, the document raises fresh questions without providing final answers.
