Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu, has praised Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his strong support toward the welfare of police personnel and his commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
The commendation came during a courtesy visit to the Governor at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Uyo, where the IGP described the administration’s collaboration with the police as exemplary.
“I came to thank you for all you have done for my officers to make their stay and job delivery easier and more effective. Your support has helped sustain the peace Akwa Ibom is known for,” Disu said.
He emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in security, noting that effective policing requires community partnership. According to him, citizens must see the police as their own and actively contribute to maintaining law and order.
The IGP also disclosed that over 1,000 police constables have recently completed specialized firearms training, describing Akwa Ibom as a trailblazer in adopting new training innovations. He credited the success of the programme to the state government’s financial and logistical support.
Beyond security, Disu commended the overall environment of the state, highlighting its cleanliness, road infrastructure, and general ambience as reflective of purposeful leadership.
In his response, Governor Umo Eno congratulated the IGP on his appointment as the 23rd indigenous Inspector General of Police and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen policing nationwide.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, stressing that peace and stability remain central to his governance agenda.
“We are committed to maintaining Akwa Ibom as an oasis of peace. Our partnership with the police and other security agencies will continue to grow stronger,” Eno said.
He also praised the IGP’s presence at the passing-out ceremony of newly trained constables, describing it as a morale booster that would inspire professionalism and dedication among officers.
Governor Eno further acknowledged ongoing efforts toward strengthening policing structures in Nigeria, including discussions around state policing, while reaffirming alignment with national security priorities.
The visit also featured recognition of key contributions by the state government to the police command, including infrastructure upgrades, operational vehicles, gunboats, welfare support, and emergency assistance for affected officers.
Top government officials, security stakeholders, and political leaders were present at the engagement, underscoring the importance of sustained collaboration between the state government and law enforcement agencies.
