A 31-year-old woman diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer has shared her story of resilience and personal transformation, emphasizing how a shift in mindset helped her navigate the challenges of advanced illness.

Adrienne Ford, a physician assistant and mindset coach based in Ohio, recounted her experience following a shocking diagnosis that came despite an active lifestyle and a recent clean bill of health. What began as mild abdominal discomfort eventually led to medical tests that revealed metastatic cancer affecting her liver.

Ford described the emotional impact of the diagnosis, noting how quickly her life changed as she moved into aggressive treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, and targeted therapies. While initial treatment showed promising results, her journey has continued to involve setbacks and ongoing medical care.

Beyond the physical challenges, Ford said the diagnosis initially took a toll on her mental health, leaving her feeling isolated as others around her continued with their lives. However, she said a conscious decision to stop putting her life “on pause” marked a turning point.

She began focusing on small, meaningful daily activities and gradually rebuilt a sense of purpose, returning to part-time work through telehealth and continuing her role as a mindset coach. According to her, this shift has led to a renewed sense of fulfillment despite her condition.

Ford also credited her support system—including family, friends, and online communities—for helping her stay grounded throughout her journey. She highlighted the importance of shared experiences and access to information in navigating treatment options.

Her story comes amid growing awareness that colorectal cancer is increasingly affecting younger adults, prompting calls for early detection and broader public education.

While acknowledging the uncertainties that come with her diagnosis, Ford said her perspective on life has fundamentally changed, focusing on gratitude and living fully in the present.
