Concerns over U.S. immigration policies are prompting some international football fans to reconsider attending matches in the United States during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The tournament, organized by FIFA, is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, and is expected to be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches.

However, several international supporters have expressed fears about traveling to the United States, citing immigration enforcement actions and border scrutiny under the administration of Donald Trump.

A German football fan, Steve Schwarzbach, who has attended every World Cup since 2006, said he decided to skip matches in the U.S. despite previously traveling to countries like Brazil and South Africa. He cited concerns about immigration enforcement agencies and the possibility of being profiled due to his mixed heritage.

Similarly, Canadian-based fan Omar Hassan said he and his group are considering reselling tickets for matches in U.S. cities such as Boston and New York, opting instead to attend games in Canada. Hassan pointed to reports of heightened border checks and concerns about personal data scrutiny as reasons for the decision.

Some fans have also raised concerns about travel restrictions affecting nationals from certain countries, which could limit participation from a diverse global audience.

The growing unease has fueled online campaigns calling for boycotts of matches hosted in the United States, although similar controversies have surrounded previous tournaments in countries such as Brazil, Russia, and Qatar.

Despite these concerns, other fans remain undeterred. Canadian resident Arjun Modhwadia said he plans to attend matches in Kansas City, expressing confidence that authorities will ensure safety and security during the event.

Experts note that while controversies may affect some travel decisions, major sporting events historically continue to attract large audiences. Analysts predict that domestic attendance in the U.S. could remain strong, even if international turnout is slightly impacted.

Economic projections for the tournament remain significant, with estimates suggesting tens of billions of dollars in potential economic output for host cities.

Still, industry observers have noted signs of softer-than-expected demand in some areas, including hotel pricing adjustments and booking fluctuations in key host cities.

As preparations continue, the 2026 World Cup is shaping up not only as a major sporting spectacle but also as a reflection of broader global political and social dynamics influencing international travel.
