The crew of Artemis II has safely returned to Earth, marking the successful conclusion of a historic journey that has brought humanity one step closer to a sustained return to the Moon.

The four-member crew—Victor Glover, Christina Koch, Reid Wiseman, and Jeremy Hansen—splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at approximately 5:07 p.m. local time on Friday, April 10.

The return marked the end of a mission lasting more than a week in space, during which the astronauts traveled farther from Earth than any human crew in over five decades. According to NASA, the Artemis II crew reached a distance exceeding 248,655 miles from Earth, surpassing the record set during the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.

During re-entry, the Orion spacecraft encountered extreme conditions, including temperatures approaching 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit and speeds exceeding 24,000 miles per hour—more than 30 times the speed of sound. A brief communications blackout occurred as expected due to plasma buildup around the capsule.

Communication was restored minutes before landing, with mission control in Houston confirming the crew’s safe descent. Parachutes deployed successfully, slowing the capsule before it splashed down gently at approximately 19 miles per hour.

Although the mission did not include a lunar landing, it served as a critical test flight aimed at validating systems for future crewed missions to the Moon. The astronauts also captured images of the far side of the Moon, contributing valuable data for ongoing exploration efforts.

The mission comes more than 50 years after Apollo 17, the last time humans traveled to the Moon. Space experts say Artemis II is a key step toward returning astronauts to the lunar surface, with future missions potentially targeting a landing as early as 2028.

Officials noted that adjustments were made to the spacecraft’s flight path to address prior concerns about the Orion capsule’s heat shield, ensuring a safe return for the crew.

The successful completion of Artemis II is being widely seen as a major milestone in global space exploration, reinforcing efforts to establish a long-term human presence beyond Earth.
