The Akwa Ibom State Government has released a total of ₦123.5 billion to contractors handling newly approved and ongoing road projects across the state, in what officials describe as a major push to accelerate infrastructure delivery.
Governor Umo Eno approved the disbursement following the State Executive Council’s endorsement of multiple road projects, covering both fresh contracts and existing works.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the funds will be used for mobilisation fees, right-of-way compensation, and the settlement of outstanding Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) owed to contractors.
The projects span more than 167 kilometres of roads, including key infrastructure such as the Ikwe–Odio Road, the six-lane dualisation of Nnung Udoe–Afaha Offiong–Afaha Nsit with a rotary intersection, the dualisation of Afaha Offiong–Ikot Imoh–Itreto, and the reconstruction of the Ikot Akpaden–Okorete–Iko Road, which includes two mini bridges in Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo Local Government Areas.
A breakdown of the funds shows that ₦69 billion has been allocated to newly awarded road projects, while ₦54.5 billion will go toward settling outstanding IPCs and additional works on ongoing projects.
Government officials say the release is designed to ensure contractors fully utilise the current construction season by mobilising resources and accelerating project timelines. The move is also positioned as part of the administration’s broader infrastructure expansion drive under its development agenda.
The state government maintains that the funding reflects its commitment to improving road connectivity, boosting economic activity, and delivering tangible development outcomes across Akwa Ibom.
