ABUJA, FCT– The Igbo Community Association of the Federal Capital Territory (ICA FCT), led by Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, has issued a clarion call to Igbo communities in the diaspora to pivot from the proliferation of “Ezeship” in foreign lands toward pragmatic measures that ensure true Igbo unity and institutional cohesion.
In an official statement , the ICA FCT warned of a “clear and present danger” threatening the future of Ndigbo in contemporary Nigeria. The leadership emphasized that the current socio-political climate leaves no room for the “needless coronations” of Ezeigbos—a practice the association described as having become “comical at best.”
” _Our Igbo community unions across Nigeria and the wider diaspora must sit up and smell the coffee,” the statement read. “It is time to embrace groundbreaking, innovative social development to sustain the Igbo spirit for future generations and to survive the ongoing onslaught on our existence as a people.”_
*A Vision for Cultural Independence*
As a cornerstone of this new direction, the ICA FCT is proposing the establishment of an Igbo Worldwide Library and Museum. This legacy project is envisioned as a global cultural hub—funded, controlled, and managed exclusively by Igbo individuals and private capital, remaining entirely independent of state or federal government ties. The association argued that such institutional building must take center stage over the “constant infestation” of diaspora Ezeships.
*Alignment with Ohanaeze Ndigbo*
The ICA FCT reaffirmed its full confidence in the current leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, led by Senator John Azuta-Mbata. The association praised the leadership’s capacity for the “heavy lifting” required to protect Igbo interests and urged all Ndigbo to rally around the apex body.
” _Our prayer is for Igbos to unify worldwide, moving away from the comedy of Ezeships in foreign lands and toward the goal of collective strength_ ,” the statement concluded.
