Israel’s parliament has passed a record $270 billion national budget, securing the political survival of Benjamin Netanyahu and allowing his government to remain in office until at least the fall, when elections are constitutionally due.

The budget, approved in a narrow 62–55 vote after an intense overnight session, meets a critical legal deadline that would have otherwise triggered early elections if missed. Despite the passage, Netanyahu retains the discretion to call early elections before the end of his term.

The approval comes at a time of heightened national tension, as Israel remains deeply engaged in an escalating conflict with Iran, alongside ongoing hostilities in Gaza and rising clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The wartime context heavily influenced the structure of the budget, which includes a 20 percent increase in defense spending, pushing the military allocation to approximately $45 billion.

However, the budget has sparked fierce political backlash. Opposition figures, including Yair Lapid and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, condemned the fiscal plan as irresponsible and politically motivated. Critics have focused particularly on a last-minute amendment allocating an additional $250 million to ultra-Orthodox schools, arguing that such spending priorities are misaligned with the country’s wartime needs.

Tensions surrounding the ultra-Orthodox community have intensified, especially over longstanding exemptions from mandatory military service. With Israel’s armed forces stretched by ongoing conflicts, public frustration is growing over perceived inequalities in national sacrifice.

The parliamentary session itself underscored the gravity of the situation. Air raid sirens warning of incoming missiles from Iran reportedly interrupted proceedings multiple times, forcing lawmakers to convene in a safer auditorium near bomb shelters rather than the main legislative chamber.

Economically, the war has placed significant strain on Israel’s fiscal stability. Increased defense spending has come at the expense of other government ministries, while disruptions to oil flows in the Persian Gulf continue to reverberate across global markets.

Politically, while public support for the war effort remains strong, recent opinion polls suggest that Netanyahu’s coalition has not seen a corresponding boost in popularity. Delaying elections until later in the year may provide the government with an opportunity to consolidate support, particularly if security conditions stabilize.

At the same time, the extended wartime environment continues to shape civilian life. Authorities have prolonged emergency guidelines restricting large gatherings and advising proximity to shelters, measures that will now overlap with the upcoming Passover holiday.

The passage of the budget stabilizes Israel’s immediate political landscape, but underlying tensions, both domestically and regionally, suggest that the months ahead will remain highly uncertain.
