A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has sharply criticised both the Nigerian and United Kingdom governments over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing state visit, describing it as “insensitive” amid recent deadly attacks in Maiduguri.

In a statement issued on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Frank expressed concern over the timing of the visit, which he said came less than 24 hours after reports of bomb blasts in Maiduguri that left dozens dead and over 100 injured during Ramadan.

Frank argued that the president’s decision to proceed with the trip, alongside members of his cabinet and top security officials, raised serious questions about empathy and leadership during a period of national mourning. He described the visit as an “embarrassment,” suggesting that it sent the wrong message to grieving Nigerians, particularly in the northern region affected by the violence.

The activist further extended his criticism to the United Kingdom, alleging that its decision to host the Nigerian delegation under such circumstances reflected indifference to Nigeria’s internal challenges. He referenced reports that hundreds of visas were issued to members of the delegation, describing the move as inappropriate given the security situation at home.

Frank also expressed disappointment that the British monarchy, including King Charles III, had not publicly addressed concerns about insecurity and governance in Nigeria during the visit. According to him, the reception of the Nigerian president at Windsor Castle, amid ongoing violence back home, risked projecting a lack of accountability.

Drawing a comparison with the United States, Frank suggested that stronger scrutiny would typically accompany such high-level engagements, particularly on issues relating to insecurity, governance, and corruption.

He also criticised the composition of the Nigerian delegation, noting the presence of senior security officials abroad at a time when the country was grappling with security threats. According to him, their absence from the country during such a critical period could be viewed as a lapse in responsibility.

While calling on Nigerians to remain politically engaged ahead of the 2027 general elections, Frank warned about the need for vigilance to ensure electoral credibility.

Frank concluded by questioning what he described as the silence of the international community on Nigeria’s security situation, arguing that global partners must demonstrate greater concern and accountability when engaging with the country.

The Presidency has yet to officially respond to the remarks as of the time of filing this report.
