By Kristianna Bourbeau,

President Donald Trump intensified his long-running feud with the press, suggesting news organizations that publish what he calls false reporting about the war with Iran could face treason charges.

Trump has repeatedly accused news organizations of undermining the country during times of conflict.

In a lengthy post on his social media platform Truth Social, the president accused journalists of spreading misinformation about military developments in the conflict. Trump wrote that media outlets repeating what he described as fabricated claims “should be brought up on Charges for TREASON for the dissemination of false information!”

The comments came after reports about damage to U.S. military equipment and viral images circulating online related to the war. Trump argued that some of the material shared by news organizations originated from Iranian propaganda or manipulated content.

“FAKE NEWS! Iran AI working in coordination with the Fake News Media!” Trump wrote in the same post, accusing outlets of amplifying misleading information during the conflict.

The president specifically pushed back on reports about damage to U.S. military assets following Iranian strikes in the region. A weekend report by The Wall Street Journal described several American refueling aircraft being hit during an attack on a Saudi Arabian air base, though the planes were not destroyed.

Trump also dismissed online images purportedly showing the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln on fire in the Persian Gulf. The president said the image was fabricated and insisted the vessel had not been attacked.

The comments quickly drew criticism from media watchdogs and constitutional scholars who noted that treason has a narrow definition under U.S. law. Article III of the Constitution defines treason as “levying war” against the United States or giving aid and comfort to its enemies, and prosecutions are historically rare.

Since launching strikes against Iran earlier this year, the president has used Truth Social frequently to respond to reporting about the war and to criticize outlets he views as hostile to his administration.

The platform has become a central tool for Trump’s messaging during the conflict. Rather than relying solely on formal briefings or televised addresses, the president has often turned to the site to announce military actions or dispute.
