The Sokoto State Government has dismissed as false and mischievous a report circulating on social media alleging that ₦1 billion was spent on the distribution of non-nutritious food items under its Ramadan feeding programme.
Reacting to the claims, Nurudeen Mohammed Mahe, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Strategic Communication, said the publication was entirely false and deliberately crafted to mislead the public and discredit the government’s welfare interventions during the Ramadan period.
Mahe clarified that the ₦1 billion allocation referenced in the report was never meant for cooked food alone, contrary to claims being circulated online. He explained that the amount covers all Ramadan-related welfare packages approved and implemented by the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.
According to him, the Ramadan welfare programme includes the distribution of raw food items to Imams, Na’ibs, and Mu’azzims of Jumu’at mosques across the state, support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), assistance to persons living with disabilities, and welfare provisions for Islamic organisations and other vulnerable groups.
He added that the programme also covers approved token support, logistics, coordination, verification, and monitoring processes necessary to ensure accountability and statewide reach.
Mahe noted that the images and videos being shared online represent only a small fraction of the overall programme and do not reflect the scale or value of the ₦1 billion Ramadan welfare intervention.
He described the social media publication as misleading and published in bad faith, urging members of the public to disregard the report entirely.
The Sokoto State Government reaffirmed its commitment to transparent governance, responsible public spending, and the welfare of residents, particularly during periods of religious importance such as Ramadan.
