A group of United States lawmakers has presented an official report to the White House describing Nigeria as the most dangerous place in the world for Christians and urging stronger security cooperation and accountability measures to address extremist violence.
In a statement released by Congressman Riley M. Moore on February 23, 2026, he said members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs formally delivered a report that outlines proposed actions to confront what the lawmakers described as persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
A separate congressional release tied to the same effort also states that Nigeria has become the most dangerous place in the world to practice the Christian faith, blaming jihadist networks and weak enforcement for sustained violence against civilians.
The development follows earlier U.S. actions that increased scrutiny on Nigeria’s religious-freedom record. In late 2025, the United States announced Nigeria’s redesignation as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” under U.S. religious-freedom law, a move that can open pathways for sanctions under U.S. policy frameworks.
Nigeria’s government previously rejected U.S. claims tied to the CPC designation, disputing the basis for the assessment.
International advocacy and monitoring groups have also issued reports describing Nigeria as a major hotspot for anti-Christian violence in recent years.
