Politicians nursing personal ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections have been urged to subordinate such interests to what has been described as the broader, enlightened interest of Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking on the radio current affairs programme Morning Flight on Passion 94.5 FM, Uyo, on Monday, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Ethical Orientation, Rev. Osondu Ahirika, PhD, said Akwa Ibom is currently enjoying a providential political moment that must be carefully preserved.
Dr. Ahirika noted that the state has been strategically positioned under the present administration, with an illustrious son occupying the office of the Senate President, stressing that political actors must act with restraint and foresight to sustain this prominence.
Responding to speculations about a possible implosion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following internal disagreements ahead of its forthcoming congresses, the Governor’s aide dismissed such fears as exaggerated. He argued that only politicians driven by excessive personal ambition would refuse to look at the bigger picture and exercise informed restraint in the overall interest of the state.
According to him, the enlightened interest of Akwa Ibom State, as articulated by Governor Umo Eno within the context of current political realities, should serve as a unifying rallying point for all patriots. He emphasized that political interests must be anchored on the collective good, stability, and long-term prosperity of the state rather than narrow personal considerations.
Earlier, while speaking on Inspiration 105.9 FM, Uyo, Dr. Ahirika also dismissed insinuations that recent political developments amounted to a hijack of the APC by new entrants from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He explained that the state chairman of the APC, Chief Stephen Ntukekpo, had already clarified the development as a strategic integration of new members aimed at strengthening and repositioning the party for future electoral contests.
