The Women Sensitisation Tour on Civic Responsibilities has continued in Akwa Ibom State, with the initiative berthing at Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Area and later in Oron, as women were encouraged to participate actively in civic and political processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The engagement, coordinated by the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, was led by the Coordinator of the Office, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, alongside a delegation of female stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Akon Eyakenyi.
Addressing women who gathered at the Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Council Hall, Lady Obareki urged them to take ownership of their civic responsibilities by participating in voter registration and political engagement.
She called on women leaders to mobilise others within their communities to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration and revalidation exercise scheduled to end on Friday, January 30, 2026.
She expressed appreciation to the women of the area for their support during the 2023 governorship election, conveying Governor Umo Eno’s gratitude and assuring residents that developmental challenges being experienced would be addressed through people-oriented projects across the state.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi highlighted what she described as the governor’s commitment to grassroots development, noting that several projects had been executed within Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Area.
Other speakers at the sensitisation programme included the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Inibehe Silas; Chairman of Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Council, Hon. Uno Etim Uno and his wife; the member representing Oron Federal Constituency, Hon. Martins Esin; and the State House of Assembly member, Hon. Precious Selong, among others.
From Urue Offong Oruko, the sensitisation team proceeded to the Civic Centre in Oron Local Government Area, where women were further educated on civic duties, voter registration processes, and the importance of forming cooperative societies to access government empowerment initiatives through accredited cooperatives.
At the Oron engagement, Lady Obareki reiterated her appreciation to women in the area for their support of the current administration, encouraging continued participation in civic and community development activities.
The January 28 outreach followed earlier engagements held on Monday in Abak and Ikot Ekpene Local Government Areas, bringing the total number of councils visited so far to four out of the 31 Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State.
