California health authorities have confirmed the deaths of two children as a fast-spreading influenza strain, popularly described as the “super flu,” continues to overwhelm hospitals across the state.

The new variant, known as H3N2 subclade K, is a mutated form of Influenza A and is currently responsible for the majority of flu infections recorded in California this season. Medical experts say the strain appears more aggressive than those seen in recent years, particularly among children.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), over 30,000 flu cases were confirmed between late December 2025 and mid-January 2026, with roughly one-third involving individuals under the age of 18. Officials believe the real number is significantly higher, as wastewater surveillance suggests widespread community transmission beyond confirmed testing.

“This strain seems tougher and more severe,” said Dr. Sam Torbati, Medical Director of the Cedars-Sinai Emergency Department. “Last year, we did not see this many patients becoming this ill so quickly.”

Health authorities say the flu season is still in its early stages on the U.S. West Coast and could worsen in the coming weeks.

A Global Pattern of Severity

The mutated H3N2 virus has reportedly undergone multiple genetic changes, contributing to severe flu seasons in countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that nearly all influenza samples tested since late September belong to the subclade K mutation.

In San Francisco alone, two additional flu-related deaths were confirmed this week, prompting renewed public health warnings.

“It is always tragic when members of our community die from the flu,” said Dr. Susan Philip, San Francisco’s Health Officer. “This is a reminder that influenza should never be taken lightly.”

Rising Death Toll

As of late January, California has recorded:

  • 139 flu-related deaths
  • 26 deaths linked to RSV
  • 917 COVID-19 deaths, largely connected to the summer surge

While COVID-19 activity remains relatively low, officials say it is gradually increasing nationwide, alongside elevated RSV cases—particularly among children under four years old.

How Effective Is the Vaccine?

Health experts acknowledge that this season’s flu vaccine was developed before subclade K was identified, meaning it is not a perfect match. However, authorities strongly maintain that vaccination remains the best defense against severe illness.

“Current flu vaccines continue to reduce the risk of hospitalization and serious complications,” said Dr. Erica Pan, California’s State Public Health Officer. “It is absolutely not too late to get vaccinated.”

A recent study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania suggests the vaccine may still provide partial protection against the new variant by triggering cross-reactive antibodies. Although the study has not yet undergone peer review, researchers found immune responses across all age groups studied.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Doctors advise that most flu cases can be managed at home with rest, fluids, and basic medication. However, emergency care should be sought immediately if patients experience:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Persistent chest pain
  • Confusion or extreme weakness
  • Severe vomiting
  • Symptoms that improve and then suddenly worsen

For children, warning signs include bluish skin, refusal to drink fluids, or unusual difficulty waking.

Health officials continue to urge parents, caregivers, and vulnerable populations to remain vigilant as the flu wave is expected to persist for several more weeks.
