Davos, Switzerland — California Governor Gavin Newsom has ignited fresh political controversy at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos after publicly displaying red knee pads he said symbolised corporate and institutional leaders “selling out” to the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking during a session at the annual global economic summit, Newsom said the knee pads — which he revealed were available for purchase through a website he created — were a pointed jab at what he described as growing submission by powerful institutions to the White House.
“The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out. And yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration,” Newsom declared while holding up one of the pads, which bore President Trump’s signature.
He added sarcastically that the items were “available in bulk,” drawing laughter and sharp reactions from attendees at the forum.
The California governor has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of global and corporate leaders he believes are choosing silence or cooperation over confrontation in dealing with Trump’s second-term agenda.
Earlier in the week, Newsom accused several world leaders of “rolling over” for the U.S. president, saying he was disturbed by what he called international complicity.
“I can’t take this complicity of people rolling over,” he said. “I should have brought knee pads for all the world leaders.”
Newsom also alleged that a scheduled appearance he was to make at the USA House, a privately organised venue at Davos, was abruptly cancelled following President Trump’s address to the forum.
“I was going to speak last night. It was a well-established event. After Trump’s speech, they made sure it didn’t happen. They made sure it was cancelled,” he said.
USA House, which is sponsored by major corporations including Microsoft, Pfizer and blockchain firm Ripple, later clarified that it is not an official U.S. government platform.
The episode further underscores Newsom’s positioning as one of Trump’s most prominent Democratic critics, amid growing speculation that the California governor may seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
President Trump, who addressed global leaders at Davos earlier in the week, remains a dominant figure at the summit, drawing both strong support and sharp resistance from political and business leaders around the world.
Newspot Nigeria will continue to monitor developments from Davos as global political tensions increasingly intersect with economic and corporate decision-making.
