The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Richard Mills, has officially concluded his diplomatic assignment, with Friday, January 16, 2026, marking his final day in office.

Ambassador Mills served as head of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria for approximately one and a half years, during which he played a central role in strengthening diplomatic relations between the United States and Nigeria.

During his tenure, the U.S. Mission deepened cooperation with Nigerian authorities across key areas, including governance, security collaboration, economic development, and people-to-people engagement.

Following his departure, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Keith Heffern, has assumed leadership of the U.S. Mission as Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim (a.i.), pending the appointment of a new U.S. ambassador.
