The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has called for a thorough, transparent investigation and the prosecution of all perpetrators involved in the violent crisis that rocked Okon Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

FENRAD acknowledged the decision of the Abia State Government to establish a committee of inquiry to probe the circumstances surrounding the violence, describing the move as a critical and commendable step toward uncovering the truth, restoring public confidence, and laying the groundwork for peace.

However, the organization stressed that setting up a committee must not end at fact-finding. It insisted that the process should culminate in clear accountability, including the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible, regardless of their status or affiliations.

According to FENRAD, the culture of impunity remains a major driver of recurring communal conflicts across Nigeria, warning that failure to follow through with justice risks emboldening future violence.

FENRAD called on the committee of inquiry to conduct a transparent, independent, and victim-centered investigation, and urged the Abia State Government and relevant security agencies to ensure that findings are acted upon through the release and implementation of a white paper.

The organization further appealed to authorities to provide relief, protection, and rehabilitation for victims, while urging community leaders and stakeholders to embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms.

Reaffirming its position, FENRAD stated that justice and accountability are indispensable to sustainable peace, emphasizing that the people of Okon Aku and Ohafia deserve a process that not only uncovers the truth but delivers justice and deters future violence.

FENRAD pledged to continue monitoring developments and engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure accountability and lasting peace in Abia State.
