Algeria defeated DR Congo to set up a clash with Nigeria in the quarter-final, thanks to Adel Boulbina’s only goal of the encounter.

But celebrations after the final whistle were overshadowed when Amoura was seen mocking a Congolese supporter.

His action sparked widespread criticism and backlash against the Wolfsburg player.

In response, Amoura took to his Instagram account on Wednesday to express regret over the incident as he apologized.

“The Congo match was a very important and very exciting match, and there was a lot of tension and excitement on the field. I would like to clarify one thing: at that moment, I did not realize what that person or symbol in the stands represented. I just wanted to joke with him in good spirits, without any bad intention or desire to provoke anyone,” Amoura said.

“I have the utmost respect for Congo and its team. Honestly, I wish them all the best, and I hope they qualify for the World Cup.

“If my position was misunderstood, I am very sorry, as that was never my intention. I will remain focused on the field and on representing my country with pride.”
