Officials have cited speed and dangerous driving, but have not said whether alcohol or drug testing was carried out, a silence that contrasts with practice in most U.S. states.
After the accident involving Anthony Joshua, attention quickly turned to speed and reckless driving. Yet one simple question has gone unanswered, whether the driver was tested for alcohol or drugs, and when such happened.
Neither the police nor the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has publicly confirmed that a breathalyzer or blood-alcohol test was conducted. In serious crashes, that detail matters. It closes off speculation and reassures the public that the basics were properly handled.
There is little ambiguity in most U.S. states. The legal limit is 0.08% BAC, Blood Alcohol Concentration or Content, with Utah enforcing a stricter 0.05%. Commercial drivers are held to 0.04%, while drivers under 21 fall under near zero-tolerance rules, often triggered at 0.02% or lower. When an officer suspects alcohol, testing usually follows. A positive result often leads to an arrest. Refusal is not an escape route because it typically triggers an automatic license suspension and additional penalties.
Nigeria’s system allows far more discretion. The FRSC has the authority to conduct alcohol testing and has shown that it has the equipment. What remains unclear is whether such tests are routinely carried out in major crashes, and why the outcomes are rarely disclosed.
Alcohol or drug testing settles questions early. When it is absent, doubt lingers. In a case of this public interest, clarity would help restore confidence.
