U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced the conclusion of Operation Angel’s Honor, a 14-day nationwide enforcement push carried out in December 2025, which the agency says led to the arrest of more than 1,030 unauthorized immigrants with criminal records across the United States.

The operation was named in memory of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student killed in 2024, and was publicly linked by U.S. officials to the Laken Riley Act, a 2025 law signed by President Donald Trump that expands mandatory federal detention for certain non-citizens accused of specific crimes.

What ICE says the operation targeted

According to reporting based on U.S. official statements, ICE said the sweep focused on non-citizens accused or convicted of serious offenses, including violent and sexual crimes, child sexual exploitation, drug trafficking, burglary, and assault.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has repeatedly framed the enforcement drive as part of the administration’s effort to shut down what it describes as “catch-and-release” for non-citizens with criminal histories, while ICE leadership described the operation as both enforcement action and a message to victims’ families.

Why the Laken Riley Act is central to the crackdown

The Laken Riley Act, signed on January 29, 2025, mandates federal detention for certain non-citizens accused of crimes such as theft, burglary, larceny/shoplifting, and assault on law enforcement, among other provisions—limiting the practical effect of local bail decisions in relevant cases.

The debate around “worst of the worst” claims

While the administration’s messaging emphasizes criminals, some reporting and civil-rights advocates have raised concerns that broader enforcement surges can also pull in people without serious convictions, fueling legal and political pushback in parts of the U.S.

Newspot Nigeria will continue to monitor official DHS/ICE updates and credible U.S. media reporting on the enforcement outcomes and legal implications.
