Growing up in the mid-1980s at 3 Majekodunmi Street, Shogunle, Lagos, I vividly recall a figure whose presence transformed our neighborhood. This “Uncle,” fair-skinned, tall, and exceptionally handsome, brought an immediate wave of joy whenever he visited. Children, youths, and elders alike would erupt in jubilant greetings, eager to receive the gifts he generously distributed. The entire community eagerly anticipated his return.
His involvement extended to our local church, The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Maboju Assembly, where he was integral to various administrative aspects. He often preached, interpreted, and participated in strategic meetings focused on empowering the congregation. A memorable event he organized, a Christmas gift exchange, stands out. Facing limited resources, we lacked the means for the customary rice donation that year. However, during the gift exchange, our needs were met—a bag of rice was provided. He truly exemplified the ability to bring smiles to faces.
As I matured, I developed a deep admiration for his character. When he announced his relocation from Lagos to Akwa Ibom State, it was a moment of profound emotion. Many shed tears during his farewell, lamenting the departure of such a compassionate and God-fearing individual. He promised to visit, a promise he consistently fulfilled. Just recently, he visited the same The Apostolic Church Nigeria, Maboju were he donated several cars, monies and gifts; indeed this Umo Eno has not changed.
Now, as a young man residing in Akwa Ibom, fortunate enough to have witnessed his continued journey, I can confidently attest: *Umo Eno has not changed.*
That same unwavering energy for bringing joy, that same compassion for the less privileged, that same commitment to making a positive impact, and that same strength now guide his leadership of Akwa Ibom State. It’s a leadership marked by enduring care. Periodically, he sends food items and cash to the vulnerable person at the ward level, a clear echo of the man we knew. This Christmas, mirroring the spirit of generosity from our childhood, he sent truckloads of rice to each local government, accompanied by cash gifts, ensuring that the festive season brought cheer to all.
The extent of his compassion extends far beyond general aid. Consider the blind musician from Eket, whose talent and struggles captured Governor Eno’s heart. Out of this compassion, he has not only secured the musician a plot of land but also initiated the construction of a four-bedroom flat, complete with state-of-the-art musical equipment worth 100 million Naira, and a monthly allowance of one million Naira.
To address a critical need and reduce unemployment, he’s taking significant steps. A total of 4,000 people are set to be absorbed into the civil service, opening doors for a brighter future for many. The list is endless, filled with examples that demonstrate his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of his people.
Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, is actively addressing pension and gratuity backlogs, investing in youth training and empowerment, and earning the praise of civil servants. His administration is marked by the development of modern schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.
In truth, Umo Eno remains steadfast in restoring hope. Governor Umo Eno continues to put smiles on faces. This “Uncle” will never change.
