Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has shared a startling anecdote during the 2025 Holy Ghost Congress while preaching a message themed “Jonah Must Go.” The renowned cleric used the story to caution Christians about the dangers of unhealthy relationships and associations capable of derailing one’s spiritual and personal destiny.

In the sermon, which has sparked widespread discussion online, Pastor Adeboye narrated an experience involving an RCCG pastor serving abroad. According to him, the pastor developed an inappropriate closeness with his female secretary, a situation that persisted despite earlier warnings. Adeboye told the congregation that when the pastor eventually married the woman, he later made a disturbing discovery.

“I think four out of the five children the woman had belonged to a former pastor,” he said, describing the encounter as a painful turning point. He added that the marital crisis escalated until the woman allegedly “chased the pastor out” and took control of the home, a situation he presented as a cautionary lesson rather than a detailed case report.

Adeboye stressed that such relationships—no matter how emotionally appealing—can truncate a person’s divine purpose:
“Anything that will not let you reach your goal, anything that can truncate your destiny… Let it go,” he urged worshippers.

He drew inspiration from the biblical account of Jonah, arguing that sometimes individuals must confront and cut off relationships that consistently pull them away from God’s intention. “When you cut off an unhealthy relationship, you might even be helping that fellow,” he said while explaining that Jonah himself did not return to God’s plan until he was removed from the ship.

The cleric concluded by encouraging Christians to pursue relationships that bring spiritual alignment, not confusion or compromise. He emphasized that while prayer is essential, believers must also take decisive personal steps to secure their destinies.

Pastor Adeboye’s message has since generated significant commentary on social media, with many Nigerians debating the moral, spiritual, and relational lessons embedded in his anecdote.
