The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear a landmark case that will determine the legality of President Donald J. Trump’s executive order seeking to restrict birthright citizenship in the country. The decision, announced on Friday, sets the stage for one of the most consequential constitutional battles in recent U.S. history.

The executive order, issued earlier this year, aims to end the automatic granting of U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil to undocumented immigrants or to parents on temporary visas. For more than 150 years, this right has been guaranteed under the citizenship clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, widely interpreted to mean that anyone born in the United States is a citizen, regardless of parental immigration status.

The case before the Court—Trump v. Barbara—emerged after several civil-rights groups, immigration advocates, and affected families challenged the legality of the order. A federal judge initially blocked its implementation, prompting the Trump administration to appeal. The Supreme Court’s agreement to take up the case signals its willingness to revisit longstanding interpretations of the Constitution.

Legal experts note that the Court’s decision could reshape America’s immigration framework. A ruling in favour of the administration could overturn the precedent established in the 1898 case United States v. Wong Kim Ark, which affirmed birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents. Conversely, a ruling against the order would preserve the status quo and reaffirm constitutional protections.

Oral arguments are expected in early 2026, with a final ruling likely to follow months later. The outcome is anticipated to have far-reaching implications for immigration policy, demographic trends, and constitutional law.
