Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has confirmed receipt of a newly filed ₦200 billion defamation lawsuit instituted against her by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, over her longstanding allegations of sexual harassment.

In a statement released on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan said the lawsuit offers her “a chance to prove” her claims, noting that previous attempts to present her petition before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions were unsuccessful.

Akpabio’s legal action, filed before an Abuja High Court, alleges that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public accusations have damaged his reputation. The Senate President has consistently denied the harassment allegations since they were first raised.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, however, maintains that the Ethics Committee declined to entertain her petition at the time, citing an ongoing defamation case filed by Akpabio’s wife earlier in the year. She added that Senate rules required her to submit the matter to the committee before pursuing further legal steps, describing the committee’s handling of her petition and subsequent six-month suspension as unfair.

With the new lawsuit, the senator says she is prepared to defend her claims and lay out her evidence before the court.
“See you in court, Godswill Akpabio,” she wrote in a brief message shared publicly.

Legal analysts say the case is expected to draw significant public interest as it pits two sitting senators against each other in one of the highest-value defamation claims in recent legislative history.

Further updates will follow as the matter progresses in court.
