In a decisive move reflecting proactive governance, President Bola Tinubu has overseen the resignation of Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, on December 1, 2025, citing “health grounds.” The transition comes alongside the President’s declaration of a “national security emergency,” demonstrating the administration’s determination to strengthen the country’s defence architecture amid persistent insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping threats. Far from a sign of instability, this reshuffle underscores Tinubu’s commitment to placing highly qualified, strategic leadership at the helm of national security operations.
The State House press release, issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, highlights the orderly nature of the transition. It confirms the President’s acceptance of Badaru’s resignation and notes that the Senate will be promptly informed about succession plans. Badaru, a two-term Jigawa governor (2015–2023), has been commended for his service to the nation. By managing this change in a transparent, structured manner, the Tinubu administration reinforces institutional stability while signaling readiness to elevate experienced leaders capable of meeting contemporary security challenges.
The reshuffle reflects Tinubu’s strategic principle, aligning leadership with operational competence. Reports indicate that retired General Christopher Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff (2023–2025) with a record of tactical gains against Boko Haram and other insurgent groups, is being considered for a strategic security role. By prioritizing professionals with proven expertise, the President is ensuring that Nigeria’s defence apparatus is led by capable hands, reinforcing both effectiveness and public confidence.
