The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ajibola Basiru, has formally announced that he will not participate in the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election. He explained that the responsibilities of his current national assignment require complete focus and loyalty to the ruling party. Dr. Basiru noted that his priority is to strengthen the APC institutionally ahead of critical political engagements. He disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across different levels.
In his statement made public on Saturday, Dr. Basiru emphasized that the Leader of the APC and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was fully briefed and aligned with the final decision. He stressed that the national leadership position he occupies demands full attention, especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify. According to him, building cohesion, unity and stability within the party is more important than personal ambition. He added that the APC must enter the next election cycle stronger and more coordinated.
Dr. Basiru assured party members that he remains fully committed to advancing the progress and success of the APC in Osun State and across the federation. He stated that his decision should be seen as a sacrifice for greater party interest rather than a withdrawal from political relevance. The National Secretary urged supporters to channel their efforts toward strengthening the party and supporting ongoing reforms. He called for loyalty, discipline and collective responsibility as the party prepares for the next phase of national politics.
Dr. Basiru concluded by thanking party leaders, supporters and stakeholders who encouraged him throughout the consultation period. He reiterated that he will continue working closely with President Tinubu to consolidate the achievements of the administration. The APC National Secretary also pledged to support any candidate who emerges through a transparent party process for the 2026 governorship race. He appealed for unity and peaceful engagement among all aspirants and party organs.
