“Funke Adeoye’s recognition is a testament to the caliber of reform-driven lawyers Nigeria is producing. Her dedication to justice for the marginalized and her commitment to systemic transformation align deeply with the values of the International Human Rights Commission. We are proud to celebrate her.”

Also reacting, South West Regional Volunteer Coordinator, Comrade David Atobaje, and Lagos State Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Ade Adesokan, hailed Adeoye’s contribution to Nigeria’s global image.

Comrade Atobaje stated:

“Her work proves that Nigerian lawyers are shaping global conversations on justice and human rights.”

Comrade Adesokan added:

“Her dedication shows how young legal professionals can transform systems when compassion meets innovation.”

A Legacy of Impact

At just 26, Adeoye founded Hope Behind Bars Africa, a nonprofit organization advancing access to justice and criminal justice reform in Nigeria. Within five years, the organization provided pro bono legal support that led to the release of over 400 unjustly detained inmates, while facilitating rehabilitation, reintegration, and systemic reform.

Adeoye is a graduate of the University of Benin (LL.B, 2012), called to the Nigerian Bar in 2013, and holds an MSc in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford as a Commonwealth Scholar.

In her acceptance speech, she dedicated the award to young African lawyers working under difficult circumstances, saying:

“This recognition is not just about me. It is for every young lawyer who believes that the law remains a tool for justice, dignity, and social transformation.”
