The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Osun State Chapter, has urged the state government to increase investment in agriculture and provide direct support to farmers, warning that the state could face food shortages if it continues to depend heavily on produce from outside the state.
The State Chairman of AFAN, Mr. Ganiyu Musefiu, gave the warning in Osogbo over the weekend, noting that disruptions in supply chains from other states could trigger scarcity and price shocks for households if Osun fails to strengthen its local food production capacity.
Musefiu stressed that prioritizing agriculture would not only boost local food security but also encourage youth participation in farming, reducing unemployment and stimulating rural economic growth.
He emphasized the need for government interventions to be targeted at genuine, practicing farmers, rather than political beneficiaries, to ensure that agricultural support programmes translate into measurable results on farms across the state.
To improve access to support, data, and information, AFAN announced that it will commence digital registration of farmers in Osun. The initiative, which aligns with a nationwide programme by the association’s national leadership, will document farmers, verify their activities, and enable them to seamlessly access government and private agricultural interventions.
According to the Chairman, a central information and communication unit—equipped with a toll-free line—has already been established to attend to farmer inquiries, complaints, and support needs.
Musefiu encouraged farmers across Osun to take advantage of the registration exercise once the date is officially announced, stating that formally identifying as AFAN members will help ensure they are included in agricultural opportunities and partnerships.
