Power Schools Series — Comparative Edition

There are universities whose identities are not merely spoken or printed in crests and mottoes, but sung.
The anthem, in such places, is not decoration — it is a ceremony of memory.
At Harvard and Northwestern, two of the world’s most influential intellectual communities, the alma mater functions as a bridge between eras, joining those who walked the halls a century ago with those arriving tomorrow.

Yet, while both universities sing of belonging, their songs could not be more different in temperament.

Harvard’s anthem is old New England in tone,  reflective, slow, spoken like a prayer recited under autumn leaves in Harvard Yard.
It is a song that recognizes the university as a custodian of time itself. A place where scholars come and go, but the institution remains, steady as a chapel bell over centuries.

“Fair Harvard! we join in thy jubilee throng,
And with blessings surrender thee o’er…”

These are not the words of a school cheering for victory.
They are the words of a community entrusting its past to its future.

The song moves carefully, almost ceremonially, reminding the singer that Harvard is not merely attended . It is inherited.

It is sung at Commencement, when young graduates look both forward and backward at once, standing between who they were and who they are now required to become.

Harvard’s anthem does not rush.
It invites reflection.
It invites responsibility.

Northwestern — Hail to Purple, Hail to White:

A Song of Living Identity, Bright Spirit, and Continuity

Where Harvard’s anthem glows like a candle, Northwestern’s is a torch.

It is sung with shoulders back, voices lifted, a marching band in full color.
It is not a song that asks for reflection — it declares identity.

“Hail to Purple! Hail to White!
Hail to thee, Northwestern!”

There is pride in it , not arrogance, but a confident recognition of togetherness.

The anthem does not speak of centuries or solemn legacies. It speaks of shared light,
a flame passed between classmates, professors, athletes, and alumni.

Where Harvard emphasizes memory, Northwestern emphasizes presence.
Where Harvard nods to the ancestors, Northwestern looks to the crowd and says:

We are here.
We belong to one another.
We stand in the same colors.

This is why the Northwestern alma mater is sung loudly at stadiums, convocations, and alumni reunions. It is a collective heartbeat.

Two Melodies — One Truth

Harvard Northwestern
Reverent, reflective, steady Bold, unifying, vibrant
Emphasis on history and duty Emphasis on identity and community
Sung slowly, head bowed Sung strongly, shoulders lifted
Ceremony Celebration

Both songs reveal something essential:

A great school is not only a place of learning.
It is a place of belonging.

To sing the alma mater is to say:
I was here.
I mattered here.
And this place remains in me.

One does not simply graduate from Harvard or Northwestern.
One carries them.
