Abuja, Nigeria — The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has strongly condemned the killing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old lawyer, journalist, and news anchor with ARISE News, who was murdered during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
Known by colleagues and friends as Sommie, Maduagwu’s tragic death has reignited urgent conversations about Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. According to FENRAD, the brutal murder represents not only a personal loss to her family and the journalism profession but also a national tragedy that underscores the collapse of security in Nigeria—even in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Nigeria Insecurity: “Nowhere is Safe”
FENRAD warned that the killing raises fundamental questions about the government’s ability to protect its citizens. “If a journalist—whose work is to hold power accountable—can be murdered in her own home in Abuja, then nowhere in Nigeria is safe,” the group declared.
The rights group drew parallels with other violent killings, including that of Emeka Ugwumadu in the FCT, and highlighted a wave of banditry, kidnappings, and violent crime stretching from Sokoto to Enugu, Borno to Bayelsa. “Nigeria is dangerously close to becoming a failed state, where life is no longer guaranteed,” the statement added.
A Call for Action and Justice
In its demands, FENRAD called for:
- A full, transparent, and independent investigation into the journalist’s killing.
- The arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
- An urgent security audit of Abuja and broader reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security.
- Protection for journalists and media professionals who are increasingly becoming targets in Nigeria’s shrinking civic space.
Remembering Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu
Beyond being a journalist, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer and a rising professional who embodied courage, integrity, and youth aspiration. Her murder, FENRAD said, is an irreparable loss to both journalism and Nigeria’s future leadership.
The group extended condolences to her family, colleagues at ARISE News, and the wider Nigerian media community, but emphasized that “condolences are not enough.”
FENRAD urged the Federal Government, particularly the President and Commander-in-Chief, to treat the case as a turning point in Nigeria’s fight for safety and justice. “Nigerians deserve to live free of fear, and journalists must never pay with their lives for doing their jobs,” the group stressed.
As Nigeria mourns Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, FENRAD insists her death must not become another statistic, but rather a call to rebuild trust, security, and accountability in the country.

PRESS STATEMENT
……Says Nowhere is Safe
Abuja NIGERIA — The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), a leading human rights and civic advocacy organization, is deeply shocked and outraged by the brutal murder of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a young journalist with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of today.
Somtochukwu—known affectionately as Sommie by colleagues and friends—was just 29 years old. Her tragic death is not only a personal loss to her family and the media industry, but also a national tragedy that underscores the rapid deterioration of security across Nigeria, including in the Federal Capital Territory, which should be the most secure part of the country.
This cold-blooded killing, taking place at the very heart of Nigeria’s seat of power, raises grave questions about the effectiveness of the country’s security infrastructure and the political will of those tasked with safeguarding lives and property. If a journalist—whose work is to inform and hold power accountable—can be killed so brazenly in her home within Abuja, then nowhere in Nigeria can be considered safe.
This is not an isolated case. It echoes the earlier killing of Emeka Ugwumadu, also in the FCT, and countless other Nigerians who have fallen victim to rampant violence, banditry, kidnappings, and lawlessness from Sokoto to Enugu, Borno to Bayelsa. It is yet another grim indicator that Nigeria is teetering on the brink of a failed state—where the most fundamental responsibility of government, the protection of human life, is no longer guaranteed.
FENRAD joins millions of Nigerians in mourning the loss of Somtochukwu, who was not only a reporter, producer, and anchor, but also a trained lawyer and a bright symbol of youth aspiration and professionalism in the media space. Her killing is an irreparable loss to the journalism profession and to a nation desperate for young leaders of vision, courage, and integrity.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues at ARISE News, and all who knew and loved her. But condolences are not enough.
FENRAD is calling for:
1. A full, independent, and transparent investigation into the murder of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.
2. The immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
3. An urgent security audit of the Federal Capital Territory and reform of Nigeria’s failing internal security mechanisms.
4. The protection of journalists and media practitioners, who are increasingly becoming targets in a shrinking civic space.
The Federal Government, particularly the President and Commander-in-Chief, must rise to the occasion. Nigerians deserve to live without fear, and journalists must be free to do their work without paying with their lives.
Let Somtochukwu’s death not become just another statistic. Let it be a turning point.
Until justice is served and the streets are safe, we will not relent.
Rest in power, Sommie.
