📍 Abuja, Nigeria –The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) has confirmed its active participation in the highly anticipated Nigeria Socio-Ecological Alternative Convergence organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). This landmark event aims to reshape Nigeria’s ecological narrative by bringing together top environmental advocates, grassroots movements, policymakers, and civil society organizations committed to building a more sustainable, just, and inclusive ecological future.
Representing FENRAD at the convergence is Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the Executive Director of the organization. He also serves as the Southeast Zonal Coordinator for Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Extractive Governance Network and Climate Sustainable Development Network of Nigeria (CSDevNet). Nwafor is expected to deliver a key presentation spotlighting FENRAD’s deep-rooted work in environmental justice, climate change mitigation, community-driven ecological governance, and human rights advocacy in Southeastern Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the convergence, Comrade Nwafor emphasized the need for bold alternatives to the harmful extractive economic models that dominate Nigeria’s development discourse.
“The convergence is a vital space to amplify community voices and grassroots alternatives to the dominant extractive and polluting models threatening our environment,” he said. “FENRAD is committed to a people-centered approach to ecological justice.”
FENRAD hopes to use the platform to strengthen cross-sector partnerships, engage in robust policy discussions, and advocate for environmental governance frameworks that empower local communities.
In a show of solidarity, FENRAD has extended an open call to all stakeholders—including environmental defenders, media organizations, and concerned citizens—to follow its engagements during the event and rally behind the movement for ecological transformation in Nigeria.
The organization also expressed deep appreciation to HOMEF for curating such a critical space for reflection and action. HOMEF, widely regarded as Nigeria’s leading ecological think tank, focuses on achieving socio-ecological justice and food sovereignty by bridging grassroots activism with national policy efforts. It challenges corporate-led extractivism while elevating community stewardship over land, food systems, and environmental futures.
As the ecological crisis intensifies globally and locally, events like the Nigeria Socio-Ecological Alternative Convergence offer renewed hope that change can and must come from the ground up.
