In a decisive move to preserve its spiritual neutrality and integrity, the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has issued a directive to all its churches across the country, outlining new guidelines for receiving politicians and government officials during church services and programmes.

The announcement came during an episcopal consultation held at the Diocese of Nike in Enugu, with a memo signed by the Primate of the Church, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry Ndukuba. The Church emphasized the need to uphold a welcoming but non-partisan environment, amidst concerns over increasing politicization of church platforms.

According to the statement, while the Church will continue to open its doors to all persons—including political leaders—it “cannot afford to be partisan in any of its programmes.” The Church also made it clear that it must “guard against speeches and whatever else that may cause division and partisanship in the body of Christ.”

  • Pre-engagement discussions must be held with any guest expected to speak, to guide them away from partisan discourse.
  • Guests must be clearly informed that the Church is not a political campaign ground.
  • Presiding ministers must avoid any utterance or behavior that could be interpreted as endorsing political or sectional interests.
  • Church officials must not eulogize guests in a way that tarnishes the Church’s image.
  • Politicians and other dignitaries should not be allowed to use the church lectern, which is consecrated for reading the Word of God.

Despite the restrictions, the Church stressed that it remains an important part of Nigeria’s socio-political space. “The Church should not shy away from discussing with the government issues that are of interest to the faithful and society at large,” the memo states.

The Church concluded by reaffirming its commitment to its divine mandate, declaring it will continue to be “the light of the world and the salt of the earth,” referencing Matthew 5:13–14.

This development is seen by observers as a timely and strategic reaffirmation of ecclesiastical authority, especially in a season where churches have become regular stopovers for political figures seeking public validation.
