🇺🇸 A United States federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at punishing prominent legal firm Susman Godfrey, marking the fourth court defeat for the administration in its controversial push against law firms linked to Trump’s political and legal adversaries.

The ruling, handed down on Friday, June 27, 2025, by District Judge Loren AliKhan in Washington D.C., declared the executive action “unconstitutional from beginning to end”, permanently barring its enforcement.

The now-invalidated order, part of a series of executive actions issued by President Trump in March 2025, imposed punitive measures against firms representing Trump’s opponents or challenging his policies. These included blocking employee access to government buildings, terminating federal contracts, and suspending security clearances—actions legal analysts and civil rights advocates had swiftly denounced as a direct assault on constitutional protections, especially freedom of expression and the right to counsel.

Judge AliKhan noted that every federal court that reviewed similar Trump orders had found serious constitutional violations, adding:

“Today, this court follows suit, concluding that the order targeting Susman violates the U.S. Constitution and must be permanently enjoined.”

The decision follows previous court victories for Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block, and WilmerHale, three other firms that had also been subjected to Trump’s retaliatory executive actions. Notably, judges presiding over these cases include both Republican and Democratic appointees, underlining a bipartisan consensus against the legality of the orders.

In a strongly worded statement, Susman Godfrey hailed the court’s decision as a “resounding victory for the rule of law”, saying:

“Our firm is committed to protecting the rights of our clients without regard to political or other beliefs. The administration’s actions were a threat not just to our firm, but to the independence of the legal system itself.”

Judge Richard Leon, who presided over the WilmerHale case and was appointed by President George W. Bush, had earlier emphasized:

“The cornerstone of the American system of justice is an independent judiciary and an independent bar willing to tackle unpopular cases, however daunting.”

While the White House has not yet announced whether it will appeal the Susman Godfrey ruling, legal experts predict further judicial resistance if it does.

Trump’s moves have stirred intense debate about the boundaries of executive power, especially as he seeks a second consecutive term and attempts to reassert control over institutions he sees as hostile.

As the legal battles continue to unfold, the judiciary’s role as a check on executive overreach is being tested in real time, with broad implications for legal independence, constitutional order, and the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
