Osogbo, Nigeria — Architect Goke Omigbodun, a former acting Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the party’s governorship candidate in the 2022 Osun State gubernatorial election, has been named the new Chairman of Afenifere in Osun State.
Omigbodun’s emergence was confirmed during a formal handover ceremony following the completion of the tenure of the immediate past chairman, Comrade Segun Famojuele. Afenifere, the influential welfarist political organization originally founded by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and allies in 1951, has deep roots in southwestern Nigeria’s political evolution.
In his acceptance remarks, Omigbodun traced his political roots to Afenifere and reaffirmed his loyalty to its ideals, vowing to lead with integrity and a renewed focus on the group’s historic mandate—championing “life more abundant” through accountable governance.
“I started my political journey in Afenifere, and I return to this seat of leadership with the determination to uphold its founding values and drive our mission of promoting responsive governance in Osun and across Nigeria,” he said.
The handing-over ceremony was presided over by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, the National Leader of Afenifere and the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF). Oba Olaitan urged Omigbodun to remain faithful to Awolowo’s ideological legacy of progressive politics and encouraged members to rally behind the new leadership.
Also present were notable figures including Hon. Sogo Fagbamigbe (State Secretary), Oba Oluwaloni Aluko (Olusogo of Olorunsogo-Ijesa), former TESCOM Chairman Elder Adegoke, Professor Kayode Akinwande, Hon. Adewale Fasure, and several other senior members of the Osun Afenifere chapter.
Omigbodun’s appointment has already begun generating discussion within Osun’s political circles, with expectations high for a revitalized and ideologically consistent Afenifere under his watch.
