In a statement that has stirred both alarm and ridicule, Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, declared during a political reception in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would secure “99.9% of the votes” in the 2027 presidential election.
The claim, widely circulated on June 21, 2025, and reported by Newspot Nigeria, was made at the grand reception of Governor Umo Eno into the All Progressives Congress (APC). There, the Senate President predicted not only Tinubu’s near-total dominance at the polls but also Eno’s re-election as governor.
Such declarations are not merely misguided—they are deeply anti-democratic.
Democracy is not measured by sycophantic confidence but by constitutional performance and public accountability. To suggest that any candidate, especially one currently grappling with widespread economic hardship, currency devaluation, insecurity, and unemployment, could secure almost unanimous electoral support is not only statistically implausible but dangerously delusional.
Let it be clear: Nigerians are not political serfs, and this nation is not a monarchy. We do not rubber-stamp rulers. We elect leaders based on merit, track record, and policy—not party hype or elite projections.
The Senate President’s job is not to campaign but to legislate, provide oversight of the executive, and defend the independence of the legislature. If anything, this type of premature crowning betrays the very foundation of democracy, which thrives on choice, plurality, and competition—not coronation.
We live in a politically aware and vocal society. Nigerians are watching. They are evaluating. And they will vote—based not on predictions or pressure, but on performance and principle.
Let the ballot, not the boasting, determine 2027.
